From Jim's chair

There has been outrage this week from Newcastle and Aston Villa fans that Spurs are able to spend money.

It is odd to see clubs who are in the position Spurs used to be in blame Spurs for pulling off the very long and arduous 20 year plan to bridge the gap between the elite and pulling it off. It’s like applauding the children of billionaires and hating on a kid who sold all his toys to invest and make his own money. Spurs used to lag behind the elite clubs, realised this, and got to work. This plan had been mentioned by Levy in 2009. He had to sell Bale, Modric, Berbatov and more to big clubs just to continue to scrape by.

The stadium debt argument is also a red herring. It’s a stadium mortgage, borrowing against an asset that earns more than it costs to service. The spend on infrastructure isn’t capped under the rules. That route’s been open to Newcastle, for example, and every other club, for over a decade. Spurs built a plan around it.

Here is a breakdown of how Spurs could spend over £300m and remain compliant.

But no more on money. Let’s focus on the summer of fun, and our transfers so far.

New Signings, Kit Unveilings & The World Cup!

Oh thank goodness I can start writing about the World Cup. Honestly, waffling is something I’m great at but you can only do it for so long before it starts dragging…

And I wanted to keep you all entertained so, here we are.

It’s been a fun week for football, especially if you’re a Spurs fan. We got van Hecke confirmed for £52mil (or ~$70mil) which means it’s a new era of same-nationality defenders. Anybody else thinking about Vertonghen and Alderweireld? I think same-nationality defenders have chemistry that is unbeatable – and van Hecke does start for Netherlands occasionally as a rotation player, plus he’s Prem proven. Also, it’s nice to have a decent amount of centerbacks with Kevin Danso and Marcos Senesi, so all I see is squad depth (which we have desperately lacked for years). We’ve also had very strong links (and apparently agreed personal terms) for Sandro Tonali, which is interesting. The fee Newcastle are asking for feels a bit extortionate though.

Spurs have also released their official kits for the 26/27 season. I can’t lie, every year Nike drops an absolute stinker for the home kit. It’s so boring. I know Spurs being white for the home kit doesn’t provide much room for creativity but surely they can come up with something better than this. Honestly, I thought last season’s one was boring but this might just be a white shirt… last year at least had blue accents on the sleeves. Smh. And that away kit… just isn’t my favorite. But that’s just my personal opinion, hopefully the majority of the fanbase likes it.

Outside of Spurs (the club), our players have all had a decent showing in the first round group stages for the World Cup. I’ll go more in depth in The Roundup section. Since I’m based in NYC for the summer, the game times have been so much better for me than those who are not based in the US. I’m sure those 3am games are brutal for those of you who are in the UK… sorry not sorry. Teehee.

Either way, I am so excited for what is happening at Spurs. Clearly De Zerbi has a very important plan that he’s working on for the next four years, and I like the way it’s shaping up. I hate how it probably won’t include Luka Vuskovic… that’s a generational talent right there and we seem to just want to offload him because he’s “too young” or whatever… De Zerbi just loan the guy out! Haha.

GAME OF THE WEEK

This is a new segment being introduced specifically for the World Cup. Now, I may or may not have asked our contributors too late for them to write something, so you’ll have to deal with my personal opinion this week. I promise next week there’ll be more variety. Haha.

Editors Game of the Week:
I can’t pick! From that electric England/Croatia 4-2 win to that exciting France/Senegal match to Lionel Messi’s first hat-trick in the World Cup (making him the current joint all-time goalscorer in World Cup history), all the matches in the first round of the Group Stage were exciting to watch.

I suppose if we want to talk about back-and-forth technically exciting football, I’d have to say England/Croatia. Yes, it’s evil of me to say I enjoyed those England set-pieces. Gosh, I feel like I’m betraying Spurs just by saying that… but an interesting match all around. Was the first match where I felt like I understood Tuchel’s decision with the squad he brought (and loved the Spence cameo).

The Round Up

Here is where you can see at a glance how each Spurs player has fared during the 2026 World Cup.
