From Jim's chair

Another day, another week of ‘Spurs edge closer.’ To what, I can’t say. This feels like a defining week for Spurs. It is a monumental time because we will soon find out if Spurs have truly started a new era of ultra aggressive spending, setting their ambitions high and chasing silverware, or, if like many seasons before, we will see our expectations rise and then dashed through unexpected causes. I choose to believe this is a new and exciting era. It feels different this time.

New Goalkeeper Hierarchy, Player Rumors, and Bergvall Leaving?

Hello all! Wow, what a week. Not just because of the results in the World Cup, but because of what’s happening at our beloved club. Lots of good things, don’t worry.

I think we should start with the signings. Spurs have signed Martin Dubravka from Burnley as a backup keeper. This shapes our goalkeeper hierarchy like this: Antonin Kinsky #1, Martin Dubravka #2, and Brandon Austin #3. Vicario has interest from clubs in Italy and is likely going to make a move there.

Also, talks have ramped up between the club and Kinsky for an improved contract as he’s the new number one. I find this fantastic. Nobody will ever forget that horror show that was Atletico Madrid away, but the fact that Kinsky was able to bounce back so quickly and stay mentally strong is a feat that not many can do. Rumors swirled that this was probably his last game in the top flight, and then he went and became an essential part of the team with crucial saves against Leeds and Wolves while Vicario recovered from hernia surgery. I believe Kinsky deserves this number one spot with my whole heart. He’s only 23 years old, which means there’s still so much he can learn. He’s already decent with his feet and his distribution skills were miles above Vicario’s once he got his confidence levels up. I hate to give Lange his flowers, but a very good signing that has proven itself, and with Dubravka to lend his experience to Kinsky, I can confidently say our big goalkeeper situation is settled for next season. I just hope that if we do play Dubravka in, say, the Carabao cup, he doesn’t have a performance similar to Fraser Forster against Coventry City.

Spurs offered £75m for Sandro Tonali, which was rejected by Newcastle United. The midfielder wants to play under De Zerbi and apparently his contract at Spurs would entail he gets more than £275,000 a week if he signs (yeesh!). It’s up to the clubs to sort this one out.

Speaking of signings, Spurs also have interest in West Ham’s Matheus Fernandes. West Ham has his release clause at £85m, and the player rejected offers from Real Madrid in favor of Tottenham. There have been reports that the player has agreed terms. Exciting stuff, ey? We are massive. Rejected Madrid for Spurs after placing 17th in consecutive seasons? We might be goated.

There have been reports that Lucas Bergvall is seeking to leave the club after De Zerbi made it clear he doesn’t plan to use him as much this season. I find this to be a loss – Bergvall is one of the most exciting up-and-coming midfield players and I think losing him would be detrimental for the future. A loan, perhaps, to a Premier League team that will guarantee his minutes, would be beneficial. But a full on sell? I think that would be disappointing. He was sold a dream by Ange Postecoglou, who unfortunately left before he could fully cement Bergvall into the starting XI and then criminally mismanaged by Thomas Frank before having an injury, to add insult to injury (no pun intended). Bergvall rejected offers from Barcelona – a team known for integrating young players into their first team – to come to us. It’d be a shame to let his Tottenham chapter end this way, especially after he swept last season’s Supporter’s awards.

Brighton also upped their offer for Luka Vuskovic, which was denied by the club. When asked in a press conference about this, Vuskovic replied “I’m focused on the World Cup at the moment, but my goal is to have a season at the club in which I’ll play, where they want me, and we will see what happens in the coming days and weeks.” Interesting response.

Finally, Spurs are hoping to extend Micky van de Ven’s contract, which expires in 2029. There is no rush, as per Tom Allnutt, but the club is hopeful.

Like I said: what a week! There’s still so much that happened during the World Cup that we’ll go through in The Round Up, but Spurs are definitely making moves this summer. If De Zerbi’s plan can truly come to fruition, Spurs might just secure Europe for next season and even potentially challenge for the title… right? 👀

GAME OF THE WEEK

In this section, feature writers of the newsletter will drop their two cents on which games they particularly enjoyed over the past week!

Editor’s Pick
Uruguay vs. Cabo Verde

Honestly this was a tough choice for me! I loved how this game went back and forth – it was exciting to see Cabo Verde keep Uruguay on their toes. Smaller nations that have entered the World Cup for the first time and held their own are always stories that make me smile. The goals that Cabo Verde scored weren’t silly either – capitalizing on mistakes and creating chances are what the game is all about. I hope Cabo Verde make it to the Knockout rounds!

Enya’s Pick
Netherlands vs Sweden

The first half was a wild ride. Dutch domination followed by Sweden putting up a strong 20 minute fight. I thought they were going to pull back a goal or two. Unfortunately, the second half was a bit less competitive. Our Dutch centre backs were on full display and I can’t help but feel we may have recreated Toby and Jan.

JJ’s Pick
Tunisia vs Japan

At the Estadio Monterrey, Japan dismantled Tunisia in a thumping 4-0 victory. It was an important result in the context of their hopes of progressing, as they booked a place in the round of 32, but it also marked the 1,000th game in the history of the tournament.
